Two young men were killed on Wednesday in an attack on Rim and Wereng communities in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, in the latest of a string of deadly incidents to strike the LGA this year.
The victims were identified as Joel Bwede, 39, and Justics Dadong, 22. National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the killings in a statement, describing the attack as further evidence of the state's worsening insecurity and expressing
According to the BYM, under the leadership of National President Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, residents of Rim and Wereng have endured intense, repeated attacks resulting in significant loss of life and property. The association renewed its call on both the Federal and Plateau State Governments, along with security agencies, to do more to safeguard citizens' lives and property in the area.
The killings add to a grim run of violence in Riyom LGA this year, including an August attack on four communities, Gwa-Wereng Rim, Kyeng Village, Dorong, and Jol Village that killed two and burned houses, as well as the August 4-5 killing of a police inspector, an Air Force corporal, and three vigilante brothers within a 24-hour span.
The recurring targeting of Rim and its neighbouring communities underscores how difficult it has proven for security agencies to establish lasting protection in one of Plateau's most consistently affected LGAs.
