Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has signaled a significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 general election, describing his recent engagement with the African Democratic Congress as part of a broader strategy to assemble a "coalition of competence" capable of addressing Nigeria's structural challenges.
In an extensive interview with Naija Unfiltered, Obi articulated a vision that places agricultural transformation at the centre of Nigeria's economic renaissance. "Northern Nigeria is our real oil," Obi declared, arguing that strategic investment in the agricultural potential of the northern region could generate revenues that surpass the country's current earnings from crude oil exports.
The former governor's pivot to agriculture as a central policy plank represents a deliberate effort to reframe the national economic conversation beyond the traditional focus on petroleum resources. He argued that Nigeria's vast arable land, favourable climate conditions, and large labour force provide the foundational elements for an agricultural revolution that could drive job creation, enhance food security, and earn substantial foreign exchange.
On the deteriorating security situation across the country, Obi expressed concern that repeated attacks on communities risk becoming "normalized" in the public consciousness. He called for the establishment of a "land war room" — a centralized, inter-agency command structure designed to coordinate security responses across federal, state, and local levels. "We cannot continue to react to insecurity in a fragmented manner. There must be a unified command that sees the entire picture and deploys resources accordingly," Obi stated.
Regarding his political future and the emerging opposition coalition, Obi confirmed that his discussions with the ADC and other political actors are aimed at building a formidable platform. "What Nigerians are asking for is not merely a change of party but a change of approach. They want competence, they want integrity, and they want results," he said.
Obi's comments come amid intensified speculation about the shape of opposition politics in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
