ABUJA, Nigeria – A fresh controversy has erupted over Nigeria's
deepening security crisis after Florida State Representative Kimberly Daniels
alleged that Nigeria's Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle,
attempted to suppress international scrutiny of ongoing killings across the
country.
Daniels, who also serves as Chairwoman of the
United World Congress of Diplomats (UN-WCD), made the allegations during a
Facebook live broadcast on April 20, 2026. She claimed that following her April
14 report on what she described as targeted killings of Christians in Nigeria's
North-Central and North-West regions; she came under pressure from individuals
linked to Matawalle.
According to Daniels, the efforts included
attempts to discredit her report and "buy support" from U.S.-based
elected officials. She alleged that an unnamed American lawmaker was
"persuaded" to publicly counter her position and defend Nigeria's
defence leadership. She also claimed to have received evidence of a
communication, including a prepared statement and promotional material,
purportedly linked to the minister.
"I am speaking on behalf of people who
say they are under attack," Daniels stated, adding that her intervention
was a call for investigation rather than outright accusation. She dismissed
attempts to intimidate or silence her, asserting her constitutional right to
speak on international human rights issues.
Daniels' April 14 report questioned the
continued leadership of the defence ministry under Matawalle, citing
"credibility and integrity concerns" dating back to his tenure as
governor of Zamfara State. The report recommended that President Bola Tinubu
consider a redeployment of the minister alongside a transparent investigation
into the allegations.
Matawalle had not issued an official response to the allegations at the time of this briefing. The Nigerian Ministry of Defence did not immediately comment.
