Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Senate has confirmed the appointment of 12 new justices to the Court of Appeal, acting on a recommendation by the National Judicial Council. The confirmation, which took place during Friday's plenary session, is expected to significantly boost the capacity of the appellate court.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the confirmation, said the appointments would help reduce the backlog of cases and improve the speed and quality of justice delivery. "The Court of Appeal is a critical institution. Strengthening it is essential for the rule of law and the protection of citizens' rights," Akpabio said.

The new justices were drawn from various divisions of the lower courts and bring diverse experience in civil, criminal, and commercial law. The NJC had recommended the 12 names after a rigorous screening process.

The confirmation followed the recent suspension of two judges by the NJC for judicial misconduct, reflecting a dual commitment to accountability and capacity building within the judiciary.
