A damning report presented before the House of Representatives has exposed the critical vulnerability of Nigeria's northern borders, revealing that fewer than 90 of the nearly 2,000 identified international entry routes are actively manned by security personnel.
The report, compiled by a joint committee on national security and intelligence, was presented during a plenary session on Tuesday. It warned that the remaining routes numbering over 1,900 — are effectively unmonitored and serve as conduits for terrorists, bandits, arms traffickers, and transnational criminal networks.
"With less than five per cent of our northern entry routes secured, we have practically left our doors open. This is a national security emergency that must be addressed with the utmost urgency," a member of the committee told Prime Brief Media.
The report recommended the urgent recruitment and deployment of additional border security personnel, the deployment of surveillance technology, and enhanced coordination between the Nigeria Customs Service, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Nigeria Police Force, and the military.
The House of Representatives is expected to debate the report and pass resolutions calling for immediate action. The Federal Government has acknowledged the challenge but says progress is being made through the e-border project and regional security cooperation.
