Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, securing a decisive victory in the party's direct primary with 1,846,370 votes.
The results, announced at the ADC national secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday after the completion of collation from all 8,089 wards, showed Atiku defeating his closest rival, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who polled 504,117 votes. Businessman and former presidential candidate Mohammed Hayatu-Deen finished third with 177,120 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Atiku thanked party members for their confidence and reached out to his defeated rivals. "This victory belongs to all of us. I call on my brothers, Rotimi Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, to join me in building a formidable party that will rescue Nigeria in 2027. The task ahead is great, but together we will prevail," Atiku said.
The primary, however, was not without controversy. Both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen have rejected the results, alleging widespread irregularities, including vote rigging and disenfranchisement of their supporters. The ADC leadership has urged the aggrieved aspirants to utilise the party's internal dispute resolution mechanisms.
Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2019 and 2023, joined the ADC earlier this year after leaving the PDP. His emergence as the ADC flagbearer adds another major contender to the 2027 presidential field, which already includes President Bola Tinubu of the APC, Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.
