Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation Afenifere has declared that the South West of Nigeria is now effectively under siege, citing a series of coordinated attacks that have shattered the region's long-held reputation as a relative haven from the insurgencies and banditry ravaging the northern zones.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, and released on Monday, Afenifere said the recent attack on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, where an assistant headmaster was killed and several pupils and teachers abducted, is part of a disturbing pattern of escalating violence that can no longer be ignored.

"Yorubaland is under siege. The attacks are no longer isolated incidents but a coordinated assault on our communities, our schools, and our heritage. We call on the federal and state governments to act decisively before the situation spirals completely out of control," the statement read.

The organisation expressed particular concern over the infiltration of armed groups into forest reserves across the region and the apparent ease with which attackers are able to strike and retreat. Afenifere demanded the immediate establishment of a regional security coordination framework, the deployment of aerial surveillance, and the strengthening of community policing structures.

The group also called on governors of the six South West states to convene an emergency security summit, noting that the region's economic vitality and social cohesion are at grave risk. "We must not wait until the situation mirrors what we have seen in the North-East and North-West. Prevention is better than cure," Ajayi added.

The Oyo State Government has responded to the Oriire attack by inaugurating a Violent Crime Response Unit, but Afenifere insists that a collective regional response is urgently required.
