Suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province launched a devastating attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School at Buni Yadi on Friday, killing at least 17 police officers who were undergoing advanced operational training at the facility. The assault, which also claimed the lives of several soldiers according to unconfirmed accounts, represents one of the deadliest single strikes on security personnel in the North-East in recent months.

Force Public Relations Officer DCP Anthony Okon Placid confirmed the attack in a terse statement on Monday, acknowledging the loss of 17 police trainees but declining to comment on the military's casualty numbers. "We can confirm that 17 of our gallant officers, who were on a specialised training programme at the Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, paid the supreme sacrifice following an attack by terrorists on Friday. Their remains have been recovered, and their families are being contacted," the statement read.

The Army Special Forces School at Buni Yadi is a key training institution for elite counterinsurgency units. The attack suggests the militants had gathered detailed intelligence on the facility's routines and the presence of police trainees, pointing to a significant security breach.

Military sources who spoke to Prime Brief Media on condition of anonymity said the attackers, numbering several dozen, approached the school from multiple directions, using motorcycles and technical vehicles mounted with heavy weapons. A fierce gun battle ensued, lasting several hours before reinforcements arrived and the assailants were repelled. The sources confirmed that military casualties were sustained but said the Defence Headquarters would issue a formal statement after family notifications.

ISWAP has increasingly targeted military installations and training centres as part of a broader campaign to undermine state authority in the North-East. The attack on Buni Yadi comes just days after a joint US-Nigerian operation killed ISIS deputy leader Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, a development that may have prompted the retaliatory strike.
