Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Governor Seyi Makinde has inaugurated a specialised Violent Crime Response Unit as part of the Oyo State Police Command, a direct and urgent response to the coordinated attacks on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area that left a teacher dead and several pupils and staff abducted.

At a ceremony at the Police Command headquarters in Ibadan on Monday, Governor Makinde said the unit, composed of specially trained officers equipped with advanced mobility and communication tools, would be deployed to hotspots across the state with a mandate to respond rapidly to emerging threats.

"The attack on our schools in Oriire was a wake-up call. We will not allow criminals to turn our state into a theatre of terror. The VCRU is one of several measures we are taking to secure our communities. We are also strengthening intelligence gathering and community partnerships," Makinde said.

The governor expressed profound sympathy with the families of the abducted victims and assured them that the government was working tirelessly to secure their safe return. He urged community leaders, traditional rulers, and residents to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activities promptly.

The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State thanked the governor for his support and pledged that the VCRU would operate with the highest standards of professionalism and respect for human rights. The unit is modelled on the recently created national VCRU launched by Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu.
