Nigeria's Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the women's 100 metres hurdles, delivered a masterclass of sprint hurdling on Wednesday to claim Nigeria's first gold medal at the ongoing 26th African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana. Running from lane four at the University of Ghana Stadium, Amusan powered to victory in a season's best time, extending her dominance on the continent and underlining her status as one of the favourites for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Amusan, who had already signalled her form with a 12.82-second heat run, was in a league of her own in the final, clearing each hurdle with precision and accelerating through the line well clear of the field. Her performance not only secured the gold but also boosted Nigeria's early medal tally, igniting celebrations among the Nigerian contingent and fans in the stadium. Compatriot Adaobi Tabugbo added to the celebrations by clinching the bronze medal, making it two Nigerians on the podium. The silver went to a Ghanaian athlete, to the delight of the home crowd.
Speaking to journalists after the race, Amusan expressed satisfaction with her performance. "I came to Accra to defend my title and to help Nigeria top the medal table. This is just the beginning. I feel strong, and I am looking forward to the relays," she said. Amusan is also expected to feature in Nigeria's 4x100 metres relay squad, which is tipped for a podium finish.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) praised Amusan and the coaching crew, describing the gold and bronze double as a reflection of the quality in the team. "Tobi is a true champion. She inspires the younger athletes, and her leadership is invaluable," AFN President Tonobok Okowa said. Nigeria's team of 41 athletes is competing across sprints, hurdles, middle-distance, jumps, and throws, with more medals expected in the coming days. Favour Ashe, Rosemary Chukwuma, Ezekiel Nathaniel, and the quarter-milers are among those still in contention.
