Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The All Progressives Congress primaries in Plateau State have produced a dramatic shake-up, with no fewer than six serving members of the National Assembly losing their bids for re-election, while former Governor Simon Lalong survived a stiff challenge to reclaim the party's ticket for the Plateau South Senatorial District.

Results announced by the APC electoral committee in Jos on Wednesday showed that Lalong, who served as Minister of Labour and Employment after his governorship tenure, defeated his closest rival by a comfortable margin. He will now fly the party's flag in the 2027 general election.

However, several House of Representatives members were not as fortunate. John Dafaan, Ajang Iliya, and Daniel Asama were among the incumbents who lost their return tickets, either at the primaries or during the screening process. The purge affected lawmakers from across the state's three senatorial zones and has sent shockwaves through the political establishment.

Party officials attributed the high turnover to the determination of delegates to elect candidates with stronger grassroots connections. However, some of the defeated lawmakers have alleged irregularities and are considering their options, including possible defections.

The APC in Plateau is seeking to consolidate its position in the state ahead of 2027, with the governorship primary scheduled for Thursday.
