Former Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Hon. Hyacinth Dajoh, has abandoned the All Progressives Congress for the Peoples Democratic Party, delivering a significant blow to the ruling party in the state.
Dajoh, who represented Gboko West State Constituency, was received into the PDP on Wednesday by former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom at a ceremony in Makurdi. The former speaker had earlier withdrawn from the APC House of Assembly primary, citing "serious irregularities" including pre-completed result sheets and missing electoral materials.
In his defection speech, Dajoh said he could no longer remain in a party where internal democracy had been supplanted by the whims of a few powerful individuals. "I am returning to the PDP, a party that respects the will of the people. My decision is final and irreversible. I will work with Governor Ortom and other leaders to ensure victory for the PDP in 2027," Dajoh said.
Ortom, who welcomed Dajoh along with hundreds of his supporters, described the defection as a homecoming and a sign that the PDP is rebuilding its strength in Benue. The APC in Benue has been plagued by factional disputes and dissatisfaction over the handling of primaries.
