Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the worsening insecurity across Nigeria, describing the nation as "under siege" after the death of a former lawmaker who died while in the custody of his abductors.

Abba Anas Adamu, a former member of the House of Representatives, was kidnapped on 3 May along the Kaduna-Abuja highway, a road that has become one of the most dangerous routes in the country. His death in captivity on 12 May was confirmed by family sources and has triggered widespread outrage.

Atiku, in a statement issued by his media office on Monday, said the incident was the latest evidence of what he called the "growing collapse of security" under President Bola Tinubu's administration. "Nigeria is a nation under siege. Every day, citizens are abducted, killed, or displaced. The government has failed in its most fundamental duty," Atiku said.

The Kaduna-Abuja highway has been the scene of multiple abductions and killings in recent years, despite the presence of military and police patrols. The former Vice President called for an urgent overhaul of the nation's security architecture and demanded that those responsible for Adamu's abduction be brought to justice.

President Tinubu's administration has yet to respond directly to Atiku's statement, but the presidency has repeatedly insisted it is making progress in tackling insecurity through a combination of military operations and socio-economic interventions.
