Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, is set to travel to the United States this week for a series of high-level meetings on Nigeria’s deteriorating security, economic, and governance situation, his media office confirmed on Sunday.

Paul Ibe, Atiku’s media adviser, said in a statement that the former vice president will meet with US government officials, policy think tanks, and international civil society organisations to present what he described as “a factual and urgent account of the multidimensional crisis facing Nigeria.” According to Ibe, Atiku is alarmed by the “alarming slide in living standards, the collapse of physical security in large swathes of the country, and the growing erosion of democratic accountability.”

“The former vice president believes that Nigeria’s crisis is no longer a domestic affair. It has implications for regional stability and global democratic trends. He will use this visit to articulate these concerns and call for calibrated international engagement that supports the Nigerian people’s demand for security and accountable governance,” the statement read.

Atiku’s trip comes at a time of heightened political tension over the Tinubu administration’s handling of the economy, with inflation at 15.38 percent and external reserves falling to $48.37 billion despite a reported N5 trillion oil windfall. Security challenges remain acute, especially in the North-West and North-Central zones, where banditry and communal violence have displaced millions.

The visit is Atiku’s first major overseas engagement since the Supreme Court affirmed the 2023 election results, and it is expected to be closely watched by diplomatic circles. Neither the presidency nor the APC has commented on the planned trip.
