Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Kwara State has been rocked by two devastating attacks that left communities reeling and exposed the worsening security situation in the North-Central state.

In the first attack, suspected bandits stormed the Yashikira community in Baruten Local Government Area in the early hours of Sunday, setting fire to a section of the palace of the Emir of Yashikira and abducting 10 residents. Among those taken were the traditional ruler's three wives and four children. The attackers also raided the local police station, overwhelming the officers on duty.

A community leader, who asked not to be named for security reasons, told Prime Brief Media that the attackers arrived in large numbers, armed with sophisticated weapons, and operated for several hours unchallenged. "It was a night of terror. They burnt part of the palace, took away the Emir's wives and children, and went to the police station. We felt completely abandoned," the source said.

In a separate incident on Friday night, gunmen attacked a night vigil in Ekiti Local Government Area, killing three worshippers and abducting 15 others. The motive for both attacks remains unclear, but authorities suspect involvement of bandit groups displaced from neighbouring states.

The Kwara State Police Command confirmed both incidents and said a joint military-police operation has been launched to rescue the abductees. The state government has appealed for calm and assured residents that all resources are being deployed.
