Former Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu has resigned from the All Progressives Congress, just days after losing the party's governorship primary in Nasarawa State to Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada.

Adamu submitted his resignation letter at the Makama ward secretariat in Lafia on Monday. In the letter, the former IGP did not provide detailed reasons for his exit but thanked the party for the opportunity to serve. Sources close to the former police chief say he is considering pursuing his governorship ambition on the platform of another party.

Adamu, who served as the nation's 20th indigenous Inspector-General of Police from 2019 to 2021, polled 49,675 votes in the APC primary, compared to Senator Wadada's 195,285. He had campaigned on his experience in security management, arguing that his leadership was needed to tackle insecurity in the state.

The APC in Nasarawa has played down the resignation, with state officials saying the party remains strong and united behind its flagbearer. However, Adamu's exit, following the defection of several APC members to opposition parties, signals growing discontent within the ruling party's ranks.
