Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned indefinitely the suit challenging the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) under former Senate President David Mark, prolonging the legal uncertainty that has gripped the party and contributed to a wave of defections.

The adjournment came after the plaintiff, a factional member of the party, requested that the case be transferred to another judge. The presiding judge, Justice Binta Nyako, granted the request and adjourned the matter sine die, meaning no new date has been fixed for the hearing.

The Supreme Court had, on 30 April, dismissed an interlocutory appeal filed by Mark against the leadership challenge, ruling that the matter should be heard on its merits at the Federal High Court. That ruling was widely misreported as affirming Mark's leadership, a misinterpretation that the Supreme Court subsequently clarified. The apex court stated that it had merely declined to hear an interlocutory appeal and had not made any definitive pronouncement on the substance of the leadership dispute.

The protracted legal battle has crippled the ADC's organizational capacity and triggered a massive exodus. At least 19 members of the National Assembly have defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress in recent days, a blow that has left the ADC a shadow of its former self.

Mark, a former Senate President and a heavyweight in Nigerian politics, has expressed frustration with the legal challenges but insists he remains the legitimate leader of the party. His opponents within the party accuse him of hijacking the ADC's structures for personal political ends.
