Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

A Federal High Court in Abuja has struck down a key guideline issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission that required political parties to submit their membership registers by 10 May, 2026.

Justice M.G. Umar, in his ruling on Thursday, held that the Electoral Act 2026 is clear in its provisions and that parties are entitled to submit the particulars of their candidates no later than 120 days before the date of an election. The judge said INEC's May 10 guideline was inconsistent with the Act and therefore null and void.

The ruling effectively extends the deadline for the submission of party membership registers to September 2026, giving parties significantly more time to compile and verify their records. The judgment came in a suit filed by a political party challenging the INEC guideline.
