PRESIDENCY DISMISSES VIRAL REPORT CLAIMING TINUBU PLANS TO RENAME NIGERIA, ABOLISH SHARIA

Abuja, FCT – By Prime Brief Media

The Presidency has strongly refuted a widely circulated online report alleging that President Bola Tinubu is plotting a series of radical constitutional amendments, including the renaming of the country and the abolition of Sharia law.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga described the report as entirely fabricated and a deliberate attempt to stoke ethnic and religious tension ahead of the 2027 general elections.

"This is fake news of the most irresponsible kind. There is no such plan, no such proposal, and no such discussion anywhere in government. It is the handiwork of desperate politicians who seek to divide Nigerians along religious and ethnic lines for electoral gain. The public is urged to disregard it completely," Onanuga said.

The fake report, which circulated on WhatsApp and several fringe blogs, claimed that the President intended to rename Nigeria the "United States of Nigeria" and remove Sharia from the constitution. The Presidency has previously had to debunk similar falsehoods, underscoring the challenge of misinformation in the country's political space.
