Senator Shehu Umar, who represents Bauchi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress and joined the People's Redemption Party, citing a collapse of internal democracy and the systematic marginalisation of grassroots members.

In a resignation letter dated 25 May and addressed to the APC ward chairman, Senator Umar said his decision was final and irreversible. "The APC has abandoned its founding principles. It is now a party where only a few powerful individuals decide the fate of the majority. I can no longer serve under such a platform," the letter read.

The senator was received into the PRP on Monday by the party's national leadership. His defection is a significant blow to the APC in Bauchi State, where the party is battling to maintain relevance against the PDP and the NNPP. Senator Umar is expected to contest his senatorial seat on the PRP platform in 2027.

The APC in Bauchi has not officially reacted to the defection, but sources within the party said efforts were made to reconcile with the senator before his exit.
