Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, launching his campaign at a massively attended rally at the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan on Thursday.

Makinde, who was re-elected for a second term in 2023, unveiled a coalition between the Peoples Democratic Party and the Allied Peoples Movement under the banner of the "Reset Nigeria Movement." Addressing a crowd of supporters, party stalwarts, and labour leaders, he said Nigeria was in urgent need of a leadership that prioritises the welfare of ordinary citizens.

"Our country is at a crossroads. We cannot continue with business as usual. The Reset Nigeria Movement is about restoring hope, rebuilding our economy, and reuniting our people. I offer myself as a servant-leader ready to take Nigeria on a new path of prosperity and justice," Makinde declared.

The governor highlighted his administration's achievements in Oyo State, including infrastructure development, education reforms, and worker welfare, as evidence of his capacity to govern at the national level.

However, the declaration drew an immediate sharp response from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, a fellow PDP chieftain and long-time political rival. Wike dismissed Makinde's presidential ambition as "dead on arrival," questioning his national appeal and political weight. "Let him first sort out his party before dreaming of Aso Rock," Wike said.

Makinde's entry into the race further complicates the opposition landscape, which is already fragmented between the PDP, ADC, and NDC.
