The Independent National Electoral Commission has confirmed that all 22 registered political parties have complied with the requirement to submit their updated membership registers, a critical milestone in preparations for the 2027 general elections.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, announced the compliance in a statement on Friday. He said the submissions were completed two days ahead of the extended May 10 deadline set by the Commission.
"The submission of membership registers is a mandatory requirement under the Electoral Act 2026. We can confirm that all 22 registered political parties have now complied. This data will be vital for verifying party nominations and ensuring transparency in the electoral process," Olumekun said.
The Electoral Act 2026 introduced stricter requirements for political parties, including the maintenance of verifiable electronic membership registers. INEC has said it will subject the registers to validation checks to ensure they meet legal standards.
The 2027 elections, expected to be fiercely contested, have already triggered intense political realignments. INEC has urged parties to continue to adhere to all statutory deadlines.
