Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has commended the Nigerian military following a series of devastating airstrikes that killed several high-profile bandit leaders and destroyed their hideouts in Kaura Namoda and Birnin Magaji local government areas.
The operations, conducted by troops of Operation Fansan Yamma, are part of a renewed offensive aimed at dismantling the criminal networks that have terrorised communities across the North-West for years. Military sources told Prime Brief Media that the strikes were based on precise intelligence gathered over weeks of surveillance.
Governor Lawal, in a statement issued by his spokesperson on Friday, described the operation as a "much-needed intervention" and expressed optimism that the sustained pressure would bring lasting relief to rural communities.
"I commend the military for this success. We are witnessing a renewed vigour in the fight against banditry, and the results are speaking for themselves. Our people deserve to live in peace, and my administration will continue to support the security forces in every way possible," Lawal said.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed that multiple bandit camps were destroyed, and significant quantities of arms, ammunition, and stolen livestock were recovered. The military has intensified operations in the region following reports that bandit groups were attempting to regroup after recent setbacks.
The North-West has been at the epicentre of Nigeria's banditry crisis, with thousands killed and millions displaced over the past decade. The renewed military campaign, combining air and ground forces, has been credited with degrading the operational capacity of several notorious groups.
