President Donald Trump announced on Friday that a joint operation by American and Nigerian forces has killed Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, the global deputy leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, in a significant blow to the terror organisation's leadership structure.

Speaking from the White House, President Trump described al-Minuki as "the most active terrorist in the world" and said his elimination was the result of months of meticulous intelligence gathering, planning, and coordination between the two allied nations.

"This evil monster, who was responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people across Africa and beyond, has been wiped from the face of the earth. I want to thank our brave service members and our great partners in Nigeria for executing a flawless mission," Trump said.

Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, a Nigerian national whose real name has not been publicly disclosed, was designated a "specially designated global terrorist" by the United States Department of the Treasury in 2023. He rose through the ranks of ISIS to become the second-in-command of the organisation, overseeing the General Directorate of Provinces, which coordinates the terror group's global affiliates, including the Islamic State West Africa Province.

The operation, the precise location and date of which remain classified, targeted a high-level meeting of ISIS commanders. According to US defence officials, multiple other senior operatives were also killed in the strike. No American or Nigerian military casualties were reported.

Nigeria's National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, confirmed the joint operation and praised the deepening security partnership between Nigeria and the United States. "This is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together. Terrorism is a global threat, and global cooperation is the answer," Ribadu said.

The killing of al-Minuki is the most significant decapitation strike against ISIS leadership since the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in 2019. Analysts say it will severely disrupt the group's ability to coordinate operations across its African and Asian provinces.
