The United States has issued a stark warning that ISIS is redirecting fighters and resources into West Africa and the Lake Chad Basin, identifying the region as an increasingly critical front in the global counter-terrorism campaign.

The warning came in a security intelligence briefing shared with allied nations and seen by Prime Brief Media. According to the assessment, the degradation of ISIS strongholds in the Middle East has prompted a strategic relocation towards fragile states in the Sahel, West Africa, and the Lake Chad Basin. Here, governance deficits and porous borders provide fertile ground for expansion.

Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon are specifically mentioned as countries of concern. The Lake Chad Basin has long been the operational theatre of Boko Haram and its offshoot, the Islamic State West Africa Province, which has carried out deadly attacks against military and civilian targets.

The US assessment warns that the influx of battle-hardened fighters from the Levant could escalate the sophistication and frequency of attacks.

American officials have pledged increased intelligence sharing and security cooperation with regional governments. However, they also stressed that governments must address the underlying drivers of extremism, including poverty, unemployment, and poor governance.

Nigeria's National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, recently discussed counter-terrorism cooperation with US officials in Washington.
