Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

A Federal Capital Territory High Court has scheduled May 28, 2026, for the hearing of a suit seeking a fresh investigation into the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, whose demise in September 2023 has continued to generate demands for accountability and justice.

The suit, filed by a civil rights advocacy group, the Justice for All Initiative, is asking the court to compel the Attorney General of the Federation and the Nigeria Police Force to constitute a coroner's inquest. The plaintiffs argue that the initial police investigation was compromised and that forensic reports and toxicology results have been inconsistently handled, leaving the family and the public without definitive answers.

Mohbad, 27, died on September 12, 2023, after being administered an injection by an auxiliary nurse, and his death was followed by nationwide protests under the #JusticeForMohbad campaign. The outcry led to the exhumation of his body and a series of testimonies before a Lagos coroner’s inquest. However, the process has been dogged by allegations of delay, suppression of evidence, and witness intimidation.

At the last hearing, counsel to the plaintiffs, Barrister Funmi Akinlolu, argued that a fresh probe is necessary because “critical forensic evidence was either lost or deliberately mishandled, and the public has lost confidence in the ability of the original investigative team to deliver impartial findings.” The defence, representing the police, has opposed the application, maintaining that the case file remains open and that investigations are continuing.

The case has come to symbolise the broader struggle of ordinary Nigerians, particularly young people, to secure justice against powerful interests. Fans and activists have pledged to maintain pressure until those responsible for the young artist's death are held to account.
