Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has finally abandoned the African Democratic Congress and thrown his political weight behind the National Democratic Coalition, a new opposition platform that also includes former New Nigeria People's Party candidate Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

At a joint press conference in Abuja on Monday, Obi explained that the decision was borne out of a desire to build a credible, unified alternative that can challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress and offer Nigerians a genuine path to national recovery. He cited “orchestrated litigation, internal crises, and endless factionalisation” that had weakened his former political vehicles as the principal reason for his exit.

“I have spent the last two years navigating a landscape where the opposition is more at war with itself than with the failures of governance. What we are witnessing is not accidental. I call on the government to refrain from encouraging or sponsoring crises within opposition parties. A healthy democracy requires a vibrant and stable opposition,” Obi said.

Kwankwaso, speaking at the same event, declared that the era of fragmented opposition is over, and that the NDC would present a formidable challenge in the 2027 general elections. “We have learned the lessons of 2023. Going forward, we will field a single presidential candidate under this platform. Our message is simple: fix the economy, end the insecurity, restore hope,” he said.

The NDC, formed through a merger of several smaller parties including the Movement for National Reform (MNR) and the People's Redemption Party (PRP) faction, has been positioning itself as a third force. Obi’s entry significantly boosts the coalition’s national profile, especially among the youth demographic that fueled his 2023 campaign.

Political analysts note that the move marks a strategic realignment ahead of the 2027 elections, but caution that sustaining unity among the coalition's ego-heavy leaders will be its most significant test. No formal statement has yet been issued by the APC or the presidency.
