The National Human Rights Commission has issued a strong demand for an immediate and transparent investigation into what it describes as a troubling pattern of civilian deaths resulting from Nigerian military airstrikes.
In a statement released on Friday and signed by its Executive Secretary, Tony Ojukwu, the Commission listed three incidents since April in which aerial bombardments allegedly killed civilians. They include the Jilli Market strike in Yobe State, the Shiroro Market incident in Niger State, and the devastating attack on Tumfa Market in Zamfara State, where Amnesty International has reported that at least 100 civilians lost their lives.
"For how long will this continue? The state has a duty to protect civilians, not endanger them. Each of these incidents demands a thorough, prompt, and independent investigation," Ojukwu said. He added that affected families deserve justice and compensation, and that the military must review its intelligence protocols and rules of engagement to prevent future occurrences.
The military has consistently maintained that its operations are based on reliable intelligence and that great care is taken to avoid civilian harm. However, the frequency of such incidents has drawn sharp criticism from human rights organisations, community leaders, and international observers.
The NHRC called on the National Assembly to exercise its oversight function and ensure that the outcomes of any investigation are made public.
