Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Nigeria Labour Congress has used the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir to deliver a sharp critique of the Federal Government's economic policies, warning that workers are being pushed to the brink and that the 2027 elections will serve as a day of judgment.

In a statement signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and released on Wednesday, the labour centre said the removal of the fuel subsidy, the floating of the naira, and the imposition of what it described as "regressive taxes" have pauperised millions of Nigerian workers. Ajaero said the government's neoliberal policies have enriched a tiny elite while the masses suffer.

"Workers are bleeding. Our purchasing power has collapsed. Our children cannot afford school. Our families cannot afford food. Yet, the government continues to borrow and spend on non-priority projects. This cannot continue. The 2027 elections will be a moment of reckoning at the ballot box," Ajaero said.

The NLC President also condemned the worsening insecurity, stating that workers cannot go to their farms, travel on highways, or even sleep in their homes without fear. He demanded urgent action to protect lives and property and called for the immediate rescue of all abducted persons.

The NLC is expected to commence negotiations for a new national minimum wage later this year and has warned of mass action if its demands are not met.
