Port Harcourt, Rivers State – By Prime Brief Media
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested 18 suspected oil thieves and impounded three vessels laden with thousands of litres of illegally refined diesel in the Abonema area of Rivers State.
The Rivers State Commandant of the NSCDC confirmed the arrests in a statement on Friday, stating that the operation was conducted in collaboration with naval personnel. The suspects were intercepted while attempting to transport the illegally refined products from an illegal bunkering site to a waiting vessel.
"Eighteen suspects are in our custody. Three vessels loaded with illegally refined diesel have been impounded. We will prosecute them to the full extent of the law. The days of oil thieves operating with impunity are over," the Commandant said.
The NSCDC has been at the forefront of the fight against crude oil theft and illegal refining, particularly in the Niger Delta region. The agency has intensified its operations following the Federal Government's declaration of a state of emergency on crude oil theft.
