The Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has cleared former President Goodluck Jonathan as the party's sole presidential aspirant for the 2027 general election, granting him a full waiver from the screening process.
The decision was announced on Tuesday after a meeting of the party's National Executive Committee. National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba stated that the party considered it unnecessary to subject a former President of the Federal Republic to routine screening, given his track record and public service.
"Former President Jonathan has served this nation at the highest levels with distinction. The party has resolved that he does not require further screening. He is hereby cleared as the PDP's sole presidential aspirant for the 2027 election," Ologunagba said.
The clearance comes despite an ongoing legal challenge to Jonathan's eligibility, with a Federal High Court set to deliver judgment on 26 May. The suit argues that Jonathan, having served as both acting President and elected President, is constitutionally barred from seeking a fresh term. The PDP has expressed confidence that the court will rule in Jonathan's favour.
Jonathan, who lost the presidency to Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, has not formally declared his candidacy but has acknowledged that he is consulting widely. Support groups have already purchased the party's ₦100 million nomination form on his behalf.
