Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Nigeria Police Force has raided a suspected enclave of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network, in Nguru, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, recovering a significant cache of weapons, ammunition, and surveillance equipment.

In a statement on Sunday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the intelligence-led operation was conducted in the early hours of Saturday by operatives of the Imo State Police Command in collaboration with the Force Intelligence Bureau and tactical units.

“The operation uncovered an expansive hideout used for the stockpiling of arms, ammunition, and equipment for terrorist activities. Three suspects have been arrested and are currently undergoing interrogation,” Adejobi said.

Items recovered included two General-Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), 3,115 rounds of GPMG ammunition, one AK-47 assault rifle, one pump-action shotgun, several surveillance drones, and what police described as “Biafra currency,” a symbolic and propaganda tool used by IPOB. ACP Adejobi said the recovery of the surveillance drones was particularly significant, indicating a shift in the operational tactics of the group.

“The presence of sophisticated surveillance equipment suggests a heightened level of operational planning and external support. We are investigating the supply chain and will ensure that all those involved are brought to justice,” he said.

The proscribed IPOB has been linked to numerous attacks on police stations, military checkpoints, and public infrastructure in the South-East, though the group has consistently denied responsibility, blaming unknown gunmen for the violence.

The three suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
