Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

Troops of the Guards Brigade, the elite military unit responsible for protecting the President and the Federal Capital Territory, foiled a potential security breach over the weekend, arresting a suspected spy near the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and four impostors in military uniform at Gwarinpa.

Army sources told Prime Brief Media that the first arrest occurred on Saturday when vigilant troops on routine patrol spotted a man loitering in a restricted area around the Presidential Wing. The suspect was observed taking photographs and making notes, behaviour that aroused immediate suspicion.

“He was challenged, and his responses were inconsistent. A search revealed a smartphone with photographs of sensitive infrastructure, and a notebook containing details of troop movements. He is being interrogated,” a military officer with knowledge of the operation said.

In a second operation later the same day, troops arrested four men dressed in complete military camouflage at Gwarinpa, a densely populated district of the FCT. The suspects, who could not provide valid military identification, were found in possession of a ballistic helmet, a fragmentation jacket, a dagger, and two motorcycles.

The Guards Brigade spokesman, Captain Umar Sani, confirmed both incidents and said investigations were ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspects’ activities and any possible accomplices.

“The Guards Brigade remains on high alert. We will not allow any breach of the security cordon around the nation’s capital. Anyone attempting to test our resolve will be met with the full force of the law,” Captain Sani said.

The arrests come amid heightened security consciousness following a string of terror alerts and the ongoing military campaign against banditry and insurgency across the country.
