Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has formally defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, deepening the rift with his predecessor and former political godfather, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

Fubara, who withdrew from the APC governorship primaries earlier this month, was received into the NDC on Friday by National Chairman Senator Cleopas Moses. The governor said his decision was to align with a party that values internal democracy, equity, and the welfare of the people.

"I have joined a party that believes in justice, fairness, and giving everyone a voice. The NDC is the platform for the future. I am here to stay," Fubara declared.

In a swift response, Wike dismissed the defection, saying his estranged successor "never had what it takes to win elections" and that his political career would end in 2027. The bitter feud between the two men has paralysed governance in Rivers State and polarised the political landscape.

The 2027 governorship election in Rivers is expected to be a fierce battle between candidates backed by the two camps.
