FCT Minister and former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has broken his silence on the dramatic withdrawal of Governor Siminalayi Fubara from the All Progressives Congress governorship primary, stating that the outcome was inevitable.

Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt on Monday, Wike, who is the estranged political godfather of Fubara, claimed that the governor had breached an understanding reached during the impeachment crisis that rocked the state in 2024. According to Wike, the agreement was that Fubara would serve a single term and not seek re-election.

"We had an agreement. He chose to breach it. So his withdrawal from the race did not come as a surprise to me. He knew he could not win. His ambition was dead on arrival," Wike said.

Fubara, who withdrew from the APC primary hours before it was scheduled, cited the need for peace, unity, and stability in Rivers State. He has since been linked with a possible move to the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

The feud between Wike and Fubara has dominated Rivers politics since 2024, paralysing governance and polarising the state's political elite. The 2027 governorship election is expected to be a fierce contest between candidates aligned with the two camps.
