Nyanya Bombing Convict Sentenced to Death by Hanging – 12 Years After Attack That Killed 70

June 20, 2026 – Abuja, Nigeria

Justice has finally been delivered in one of Nigeria's deadliest terror attacks. The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Zakaria Garba, 37, to death by hanging for his involvement in the 2014 Nyanya Motor Park bomb explosions that killed at least 70 people and injured many others.

Garba was sentenced to 35 years' imprisonment on counts one and two, life imprisonment on count three, and death by hanging on counts four and five.

The 2014 attack, which occurred near a bustling bus terminal on the outskirts of Abuja, sent shockwaves across the nation. No fewer than 70 people were killed in the attack, which was one of the deadliest in the history of the Federal Capital Territory.

The court's decision has been welcomed by victims' families and human rights groups, though some question whether justice was delayed for too long.
