Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Nigerian Armed Forces have pushed back strongly against claims that they are undermining democratic authorities in the South-West, describing such allegations as a distortion of the military's constitutional role and a misrepresentation of its recent security assessments.

At a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, addressed a report that had framed the Defence Headquarters' classification of terrorist elements in the South-West as an attempt to override civilian governance structures.

"The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain unwaveringly loyal to the Constitution and the elected government. Any suggestion that we are undermining democratic authorities is false and misleading. Our duty is to protect the territorial integrity of Nigeria and to assist civil authorities in maintaining law and order. Nothing more, nothing less," Onoja said.

The controversy followed the DHQ's disclosure that dislodged Boko Haram elements were responsible for the abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State. Some commentators had interpreted the military's language as a prelude to an expansion of military authority into the South-West.

Onoja reiterated that all military operations in the region are being conducted in full coordination with state governments and the Nigeria Police Force.
