Senate orders crackdown on bandits flaunting crime cash on TikTok

The Defence Headquarters has identified the perpetrators of the shocking abduction of students and teachers from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State as members of the Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati wal-Jihad, widely known as Boko Haram.

In a statement released on Friday, Director of Defence Media Operations Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja said the terrorists were previously operating in the North-East and parts of the North-Central but were dislodged by sustained, high-intensity military operations. They have since been attempting to establish new safe havens in forest reserves across the South-West.

"Our operations in the North-East and North-Central have significantly degraded the operational capacity of JAS elements. The terrorists we are seeing in Oyo are remnants fleeing the heat of those operations. We are already working with Oyo State security forces to track and neutralise them," Onoja said.

The disclosure confirms long-held suspicions that the violence previously confined to the northern zones is migrating southwards. The DHQ statement contradicts earlier assertions by some officials that there were no established terrorist bases in the South-West, though Onoja stressed that the group's presence remains fragmented and opportunistic rather than entrenched.

The Oyo State Police Command has not confirmed the DHQ's characterisation, insisting that intensive rescue operations continue.
