Abuja, FCT – By Prime Brief Media
Nigeria and Malaysia are intensifying efforts to deepen bilateral trade relations, with the halal economy identified as a key driver of future growth. Malaysia's exports to Nigeria rose by 20.7 per cent in 2025, reaching $664 million, according to data released by the Malaysian High Commission in Abuja on Thursday.
The halal economy, which spans food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fashion, and Islamic finance, is a multi-trillion-dollar global market. Malaysia, a global leader in halal certification and production, sees Nigeria as a strategic partner given its large Muslim population and growing consumer market.
"Nigeria is a priority market for Malaysia. The halal economy offers a framework for deepening our trade relationship in a way that benefits both countries. We are working with Nigerian authorities to harmonise certification standards and facilitate investment," the Malaysian High Commissioner said.
The Federal Government has expressed interest in developing Nigeria's domestic halal industry to reduce import dependence and create jobs. The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment is said to be working on a national halal strategy.
