The political gamble taken by several senators who defected from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress has backfired spectacularly, with multiple defectors failing to secure the party's return tickets at the just-concluded primaries.
A review of the primary results by Prime Brief Media shows that no fewer than six senators who crossed from the Peoples Democratic Party, the Labour Party, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the APC in the last two years were either defeated at the polls or disqualified during the screening exercise.
The affected lawmakers, drawn from across the North-Central, South-South, and South-East geopolitical zones, had banked on the ruling party's perceived electoral strength to extend their legislative careers. However, state governors and established APC structures in their constituencies proved resistant to what some party stalwarts described as "opportunistic defections."
"The message from the primaries is clear: the APC is big enough to absorb new members, but no one is guaranteed a ticket. You still have to earn it at the grassroots," an APC National Working Committee member told Prime Brief Media.
The rejection of the defecting senators has triggered fresh political realignments, with some of the aggrieved lawmakers reportedly considering a return to their former parties or a move to alternative platforms.
