Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation Hadin Kai, have successfully thwarted an attempted infiltration by suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists in Buratai town, Borno State, in the latest demonstration of the military's operational readiness in the Lake Chad theatre.
According to preliminary accounts from military sources, the insurgents attempted to infiltrate the town in the early hours of Sunday, April 26, 2026, likely seeking to attack soft civilian targets or establish a temporary foothold. The troops, who were on high alert following intelligence reports of heightened militant activity in the area, responded with swift and decisive force.
"The terrorists attempted to sneak into the outskirts of Buratai under cover of darkness, but our men were waiting for them. A fierce gun battle ensued, and the attackers were forced to retreat in disarray, abandoning their mission," a security source familiar with the operation told Prime Brief Media on condition of anonymity.
No casualties were reported on the side of the Nigerian military, and there were no civilian casualties. The Defence Headquarters has not yet released an official statement regarding the engagement, but community sources confirmed hearing sustained gunfire in the early hours of the morning.
Buratai, the hometown of former Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (retd.), holds symbolic and strategic significance. It is located in Biu Local Government Area, along the southern fringes of the Sambisa Forest corridor. The town has been targeted multiple times over the years by insurgent groups seeking to undermine military morale and project an image of reach into areas considered politically sensitive.
The repelled infiltration is the latest in a series of routine but critical defensive actions conducted by troops under Operation Hadin Kai. The mission continues to degrade Boko Haram and ISWAP capabilities through a combination of clearance patrols, ambush operations, and intelligence-led raids. Just this week, troops reportedly killed 24 insurgents during an attack on a military location in Kukareta, Yobe State, and recovered a significant cache of arms. Earlier in April, forces successfully detonated an IED planted by insurgents at the exit gate of Mairari town along the Gajiram axis.
Security analysts note that while the insurgents' capacity to hold territory has been significantly dismantled, they retain the ability to launch opportunistic raids and infiltration attempts on vulnerable communities. The strategy of targeting small towns and villages reflects a shift to asymmetric tactics designed to create a sense of pervasive insecurity despite territorial losses.
